Brigadier General (Retired) Russell Howard is the former Head of the Department of Social Sciences and the inaugural Director of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.
Prior to his service at West Point, Brigadier General Howard served as an Army Chief of Staff Fellow at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. Brigadier General Howard also commanded the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis, Washington. Other military assignments include serving as the Assistant to the Special Representative to the Secretary General during UNOSOM II in Somalia, Deputy Chief of Staff for I Corps, Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander for the Combined Joint Task Force, Haiti/Haitian Advisory Group, Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, administrative assistant to Admiral Stansfield Turner, and Special Assistant to the Commander of SOUTHCOM.
Currently, Brigadier General Howard is a senior fellow at the Joint Special Operations University.
